Year 1
Welcome to Year 1!
Miss Enright
Hello and a big warm welcome to Year 1! In our class, we use hands-on and engaging learning opportunities to assist children in their learning journey. Through this transition from Reception into Key Stage 1, we strive to celebrate all achievements and progress, supporting the children as they continue their journey to becoming independent, well-rounded and, most importantly, happy individuals.
Here you will find the relevant documents to support your child's learning, key information and some pictures of the lovely activities we have been doing together in class.
Term 1 Learning
Welcome back! It has been lovely welcoming the children back to school after the Summer. This term, in English, we will focus on the theme 'On My Travels'. We will read Petra, Snail Trail, This is Sadie and Let's Go For a Walk - these stories will help to inspire our writing! In Maths, we will begin by counting, comparing, estimating and adding numbers up to 10. This will take the form of hands-on learning, using tens frames, rekenreks and number lines to support.
In Science, we will be exploring a range of everyday materials. We will sort these based on their properties and explore how we can use these creatively and in experiments. As Geographers, we will be using the book Martha Maps It Out to make messy maps of our classroom and drawn birds-eye view maps our school's street. We will then expand our focus to the United Kingdom and the seven continents - considering how the equator affects climate. We will be using compasses and atlases to make this exciting and inspire curiosity!
To support the children with their transition into Year 1, we have lots of engaging areas around the classroom that the children can access outside of their main learning. The children can learn through a Maths area, a Small World Area central to our 'On My Travels' stories this term, a Science area, RE corner and Curiosity corner (which is currently themed with our Geography topic).
