French

"Go and make disciples of all nations."
                                                                                                                                        Matthew 28:19

Intent
At St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School, we believe language is a gift from God that helps us connect with others and learn about His creation. Our PlanIt French curriculum
is designed to build skills progressively, with a focus on speaking and listening in Lower Key Stage 2, and expanding to reading and writing in Upper Key Stage 2. Through themes
like Time Travelling, Let’s Visit a French Town, and This Is France, we introduce children to the culture of French-speaking countries, inspiring curiosity and reflection on the
world God has made. We aim to nurture confident, curious, and reflective language learners who can share God’s love through language, preparing them for future language
studies and a broader understanding of the world around them.

Implementation
At St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School, our French lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure that prior learning is built upon, with regular opportunities for revision of
language and grammar. Each lesson is designed to help children reinforce their existing knowledge while introducing new skills, providing a smooth progression in their language
learning journey. Our lessons and resources are crafted to build on what the children already know, with a strong focus on both introducing new vocabulary and revising key
grammatical structures. We ensure that essential vocabulary is included in display materials and additional resources, so children can regularly revisit and consolidate their
learning. Through this structured approach, we aim to create a supportive and nurturing environment where every child can thrive in their language learning and deepen their
understanding of French-speaking cultures.

Impact
Our goal is to ensure that French is loved by both pupils and teachers, inspiring a shared passion for the language and motivating children to pursue further language studies.
We will measure the impact of our approach through key questioning techniques built into lessons, child-led assessments such as success criteria grids, and KWL grids, along
with summative assessments that identify the next steps in each child’s learning journey. At St. Augustine’s, we aim to cultivate a love for languages that extends beyond the
classroom, helping every child feel confident and excited about their language learning.
